News from the
Modern Languages Department
Ça bouge!
It has been an exciting semester in the Modern Languages
Department. Our students have been busy representing Newtonbrook
at a number of different events. We would recognize the
commitment and dedication of a number of students to their
French studies.
In April a group spent the day at Glendon College, York
University at the French for the Future conference. This
conference encourages and promotes linguistic duality in Canada
by highlighting its positive social and career benefits. They
attended workshops presented by local francophones who
highlighted the positive career potential resulting from French
language education. A special thank you to Ali Daneshvar
and Maia Forster for introducing two of the guest
speakers at the conference.
In addition, Ali Daneshvar, Adrienne Siu and Natalia
Shevcun competed in the University of Toronto French
Contest. They were given a battery of tests both written and
oral to test their competency in the language of Molière. We are
proud of the strong results of our three participants and we
would like to congratulate Adrienne Siu for receiving 2nd
Prize: “Prix d’excellence of français”.

We would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate
Ali Daneshvar for his outstanding performance at the
Canadian Parents for French (Ontario)’s 24th annual French
public speaking event (Concours d’art oratoire). Along with 300
participants from across Ontario, Ali took the third place prize
in his category. Félicitations, Ali!

Thank You
from the Canadian Blood Services!
On behalf of Canadian Blood Services and my self, I would like
to thank you, your wonderful students and the school at large
for your support in hosting, promoting and coordinating the
blood donor clinic at your school on May 21st.
The clinic was a great success! A total of 60 donors attended
the clinic and we collected 46 units which translates into 90% %
of our 51 unit goal. This figure is even more rewarding as we
realize that the 46 units collected can save or improve the
lives of up to 138 people.
Please pass my gratitude and appreciation to the students who
worked hard to make the event a success. A 'thank you' letter
for them is in the mail.
Once again, thank you very much for you continued support to
this essential community service.
I look forward to seeing same enormous success in our clinics in
future.
Sincerely
Hailu Mulatu

Congrats to
Ulkar Mammadova &
Erica Kowal
for their Impact on
Students Within their School certificates!

Congrats to Ulkar
Mammadova and Erica Kowal. Both students were
recently honored at the OSSTF District 12 Status of Women 8th
Annual Awards Dinner held at the Montecassino Hotel & Banquet
Centre on Thursday, May 1st, 2008. Among the many
other candidates nominated by their teachers throughout the TDSB
secondary schools, both Ulkar and Erica were recognized by the
secondary school teachers’ union for their respective
contributions made in the category of Impact on Students Within
their School. Our two students were accompanied to this event
by Ms. Hecht, Ms. Thompson, Ms. Gordon, Ms. Clish, Ms. Pak, Mr.
Booth, Ms. Simmons and Ms. Kowal, Erica’s mom. Highlights of
the evening, following dinner included guest speaker Susan Ursel,
Labour and Human Rights lawyer who delivered an impassioned and
totally riveting talk to all in attendance concerning bullying
issues in our schools today, followed by Ulkar and Erica
receiving their prestigious certificates.
In addition to our two
award recipients, there were a number of other students,
teachers and professional student services personnel who were
also recognized and received awards in other various categories.
Our girls, of course, were
honored for their extra-curricular involvement at Newtonbrook.
Ulkar has represented herself as an exemplary role model
to her teachers and fellow students in all activities she
undertakes whether they involve athletic teams such as girls’
volleyball, rugby, badminton or basketball. In addition, to
these sports activities, she is also actively involved in many
other important worthwhile organizations such as Free the
Children, Invisible Children and NAC. In every activity, Ulkar
generously commits her time, her effort and positively
represents what Newtonbrook school spirit is all about.
Erica has been a
strong leader at Newtonbrook since she started the Music
Organization of Brook (MOB) in her grade 10 year. Since then,
she has been a role model to her peers with her gracious
leadership in the Concert Band, with her community work in the
NOW program, with her school spirit as a Newtonbrook Leader and
her skills on the Girl’s Volleyball and Ultimate teams. She is
truly a team player and her positive attitude is infectious to
all those around her!

Congratulations from Forest Valley Staff to Sandra Walters and
her fantastic Grade 9 Geography class!
We couldn't resist sending out a huge thank you and
congratulations note to Newtonbrook for the absolutely
phenomenal effort from Sandra Walters' Grade 9 Geography class
that came to Forest Valley this past week. Students were
actively involved in trying to minimize the impact of flooding
from spring runoff and damage to our pathways. Students were
either extending a path in our meadow area using caprock or
building a bog bridge/boardwalk on a separate path further from
the main area. In the afternoon, students combined to continue
working on the boardwalk and also lining a new trail with logs
and brush. All areas were used the very next day by our classes!
With 5 classes on site each day, it's easy to see that hundreds
upon thousands of students will benefit from Newtonbrook's
commitment to community and experiential learning.
Congratulations once again from Forest Valley Staff to Sandra
Walters and her fantastic Grade 9 Geography class!

Newtonbrook's Poetry Slam
On Friday, April 4th, the Writer’s Craft class treated some
Newtonbrook students to a Poetry Slam. For those who’ve never
been to one, a poetry slam consists of poets performing their
spoken word poetry, and being judged by members of their
audience. The audience claps or snaps on lines that excite,
cheers and hollers when it agrees with the score of a judge, and
boos if it doesn’t.

Speaking Skills grade 11 elective course ,

NEWTONBROOK IN EUROPE 2008
During March Break, Ms Manios and Mr. Fogel
travelled to Italy and Greece with 36 students.
Everyone had an amazing time. New friendships were
forged, and old ones rekindled. It was a trip to
ancient civilizations, as we spent time in Rome and
Athens. Highlights from Rome included sharing a
gelato (ice cream) by the Trevi Fountain, racing
around the Coloseum, and standing in St. Peter's
Square with 50 000 people from around the world
listening to the Pope deliver his prayer for peace.
In Greece, we learned the true meaning behind the
mystery of the oracle of Delphi, climbed the
Acropolis and the Temple of Athina, and danced on
stage with local musicians in a traditional Greek
taverna. It was a terrific experience, and everyone
had a lot of fun; even the torrential rain and hail
in Capri in the south of Italy was met with
laughter!
Stay tuned for more information on next year's trip
to exciting England and France, where we will visit
London, Canterbury, St. Malo, Normandy, Chartres,
and Paris.

Congratulations
Newtonbrook Wrestling Teams!
This year the wrestling teams continued their success in recent
years by adding more championships. During the season the
Newtonbrook Wrestling team won the Port Credit tournament, which
indicated the kind of season it would be. The girls’ team won
their 5th consecutive regional and city championships
while the boys were able to get their 4th consecutive
regional and 3rd consecutive city championships. The
boys’ team qualified 15 wrestlers to compete at OFSAA while the
girls’ team added 12 of their own wrestlers. Out of over 200
competing schools, the boys’ team came back from OFSAA placing
in 7th place and Newtonbrook as a school, with the
help of the girls’ wrestling team, finished in 6th
place. Individually congratulations to Rebecca Levitt,
Rebecca Mayers and Jasmine Warner for finishing in
the top 8 at OFSAA in their respective weight classes. Special
recognition goes to Alex Siplyarsky who finished in 2nd
place in the 77kg weight class and
Cruiz Manning for winning the 57.5kg weight class and becoming
an OFSAA Champion to complement his 2008 Ontario
Provincial Open Championship.
For
names of the medalists and the team points from the regionals
and the city championships, go to the
wrestling page.
Mr. Kilimnik, Mr. White and Ms. Clish would like to express how
proud they are of their teams and the many accomplishments they
had this year both individually and team titles. We admire you,
we are proud of you and we thank you for all the hard work and
dedication that you showed throughout the season.

Newtonbrook Student Among Top Four in Canada!
What’s
the big idea? For grade 12 student
Floura Nasri it was a
special device that
detects a sleeper’s snoring and sounds a
gentle alarm to wake the sleeper.
Floura’s idea was one of
four “Ideas of the Year” at the third national Idea Competition
sponsored by Rogers Communication and the University of
Toronto’s department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Floura was awarded a
$1000 scholarship and $500 in cash.
