Championship Field for Newtonbrook?
We need your help now!
There is talk of Newtonbrook getting an
artificial turf field and upgraded track! And we need you to
write to your MP and MPP
to encourage
their governments to follow through on the funding initiatives that have been
proposed.
The Toronto District
School Board has submitted a request for grant funding through the recently
announced Recreational Infrastructure Program (RinC) to support the
development of 4 outdoor championship turf fields and one covered championship
field facility. Newtonbrook has been selected as one of the four schools to
receive one of these fields.
The field will be sized and lined to be suitable for soccer
and football at a minimum. The new field and track will be permitted by the
community in the evenings and weekends. TDSB will have access to the field
from 8am to 6pm on school days.
The key will be
determining whether there is enough permit revenue at each site to support the one-third cost of
building that would fall to the TDSB while still maintaining appropriate
community access to the field. One of the fields identified for this project
is that at Newtonbrook Secondary School. While an improved field will be a
wonderful asset to the community, this will not happen at all unless we have
sufficient permit backing and a funding go-ahead from the provincial and
federal governments. It will be important, therefore, to encourage our local
MP and MPP to encourage their governments to follow through on the funding
initiatives that have been proposed. If you wish to take this up with MP
Martha Hall-Findlay, you can e-mail her at
HallM@parl.gc.ca . If you wish to take this up with MPP David Zimmer, you
can e-mail him at
dzimmer.mpp@liberal.ola.org .

E-Learning
Students in
grade 10, 11 or returning 12 students will have the opportunity
to enrol in E-learning courses for next year. The last time
that virtual school will be available is this summer. To take a
course online, students will now have the option of E-learning
if they meet the registration criteria. E-learning courses will
be available to students who wish to:
-
take a
course not currently offered at our school or
-
take a
course that does not fit in your timetable, a conflict (this
you will know later in the year)
These courses
make up part of your day school timetable. They are not
available as an “extra” course (i.e. you cannot take 5 courses
in one semester) To consider whether E-learning is for you, ask
yourself these questions:
Are you: self
directed, self motivated, comfortable with technology, capable
of working independently, able to regularly use a computer with
internet access, able to get your parents/guardians(<18) support
for this type of learning?
If you are
interested, you are encouraged to speak to your parents and/or
guardians and your counsellor and visit the website

Congratulations
Brook Wrestlers!
Newtonbrook wrestling teams continue to impress year after year
as once again they were able to set new records and new
success. The boys’ team was able to win their 5th
consecutive regional and 4th consecutive city
championships title. The girls were able to continue their
dominance with a 6th consecutive regional and city
championships. On route to winning the city championships, the
boys were able to qualify 15 wrestlers to OFSAA, while the girls
added 11 more to their representation at the OFSAA
championships. The teams’ success did not stop at the city
championships level as they set their goals to do well at OFSAA.
Do well they did, as the girls’ team (6th place) and
the boys’ team (9th place) combined to a 4th
place overall in the combined OFSAA title out of 201
participating schools. Congratulations to Jamie Lippiatt who
finished 6th in the 77kg weight class and Rebecca
Mayers who earned a 5th place in the 54kg weight
class. Newtonbrook did not stop there as Rebecca Levitt earned
Newtonbrook’s 2nd ever girls medal with a silver in
the 61kg weight class. The highlight of the tournament came
when Cruiz Manning repeated last year’s achievement as he earned
his 2nd consecutive OFSAA championship at the 57.5kg
weight class. Cruiz Manning is now preparing for the Junior
Canadian Championships in Saskatchewan, Regina on
Mar. 20th, 2009.
In addition, Rebecca Levitt and Rebecca Mayers will head to
Fredericton,
New Brunswick on April 3rd, for the Juvenile Canadian
Championships. Good luck to the three wrestlers as Newtonbrook
is proud of being represented by their own student-athletes at
the Canadian national championships.
Mr. Kilimnik, Mr. White and Ms. Clish would like to express how
proud they are of their teams and the many accomplishments they
had this year both individually and team titles. We admire you,
we are proud of you and we thank you for all the hard work and
dedication that you showed throughout the season.

"The Bite of the
Mango"
On Friday, November 28,
Newtonbrook is fortunate and thrilled to have Mariatu Kamara
come and speak to 800 of our students and staff in the
cafetorium. When Mariatu was just 12 years old living in Sierra
Leone, armed rebels attacked her village and brutally cut off
her hands. Miraculously, Mariatu survived, and thus began her
remarkable journey that has seen her move from the African bush,
to begging in the streets of Freetown, and ultimately to North
America.
In her memoir, The Bite of the Mango, Mariatu recounts her
unforgettable story of courage, resilience, and hope. She is
currently attending college in Toronto, and is a UNICEF Special
Representative for Children and Armed Conflict.
Copies of her memoir will be available for $10 in the front
foyer during the morning and after lunch.
The presentation is made possible with the support of the
English and Canadian and World Studies Departments, and the
Administration. A special thank you must be given to Mrs. Smith
Berish, who organized the event.

Poets Slam with Professionals
A poetry slam
is like a competition for “spoken word” poetry. Poets take turns
reciting their poems, and are judged by judges selected from the
audience. After three rounds of animated performances and
matching responses from the audience, the scores are added up
and the winners announced.
On October 22nd,
the Toronto Poetry Slam organizer and published poet, David
Silverberg, and the Toronto Poetry Slam finalist, Arianna
Pozzuoli, were invited to slam at Newtonbrook. Two of
Newtonbrook’s own talented poets, Janelle Thomas and Ari
Bernstein, bravely volunteered to slam with them.
Newtonbrook
students were in for a treat as most experienced the thrill of
spoken word poetry for the first time. Not only did the audience
of over 100 students greatly enjoy the variety of the different
writing and delivery styles of the four poets, but they also saw
their own classmate, Janelle Thomas, win second place in the
slam.

Halloween at
Regent Park Elementary School
On Thursday October 23rd,
2008, eight students and one staff advisor from Newtonbrook’s
Students Making a Difference (SMD) organization visited
Regent Park Elementary School to deliver donated Halloween
costumes, decorations, art supplies and a pumpkin. This
collection of donated items was the result of a monthly
initiative of SMD which turned out to be a great success. The
donations were given to 12 students between the ages of nine and
eleven who were all in need of a costume for Halloween. This
initiative was a great accomplishment for SMD, as we were able
to reach out to the community and give other students the
opportunity to experience this timeless annual tradition.
Putting a smile on every child’s face in that class was an
awesome and worthwhile experience for Newtonbrook students.
SMD is extremely grateful
and would like to thank everyone for their thoughtful donations
and kind support.

NEWTONBROOK IN
EUROPE 2009
This March Break, students of Newtonbrook S.S. will have the
opportunity to choose between one of two trips to Europe!
TRIP # 1:
This March Break, students will travel once again to Italy,
Monaco and France. The name of this magnificent trip is
"Romantic Europe". Students are invited to visit Ms. Hason
in Room 218 to receive more information and details regarding:
the itinerary, cities and sites, hotels and the cost which is
value-packed and extremely affordable.
Students and parents are invited to visit our travel website:
www.eftours.ca . Follow the
links to 'Get Started' and 'Check out your teacher's tour': Tour
#458110.
Italy:
A country that begot imperial Rome, illustrious Florence,
enchanting Venice, and fiery Palermo, Italy has long had the
culture market cornered. To an impressive number of artistic
masterpieces and historical monuments add sumptuous food,
breathtaking landscapes, and an irrepressible passion for life
and it's undeniable—Italy dazzles.
France:
Thoughts of France tend to linger on romance, style, and la vie
en rose. Whether France conjures up visions of outdoor Parisian
cafes, lush, pastoral Provence, or the glittering Riviera, this
country stirs refined passions and inspires flowering
imaginations.
TRIP # 2:
Newtonbrook is going to Europe for the 8th consecutive year!
During March Break, 2009, join Mr. Fogel as he takes Newtonbrook
students on an amazing journey to England and France. See
the incredible sights of London, including Buckingham Palace,
Tower of London, the London Eye, St. Paul's Cathedral, and of
course, we will see a play in London's famous West End Theatre.
Travel to Canterbury to see the awe inspiring Canterbury
Cathedral before crossing the English Channel and arriving in
France. Visit Normandy and Juno Beach, paying tribute to WWII
troops who fought in the D-Day invasion. See St. Malo on the
Brittany coast and the breathtaking Mont St. Michel, an 8th
century abbey perched high on granite rock and surrounded by
water at high tide and quicksand at low tide. Visit the famous
cathedral in Chartres, Europe's grandest Gothic cathedral and
the world's finest stained glass windows. Lastly, arrive in
Paris and see the Arc de triomphe, Champs-Elysees, the palace of
Versailles, a cruise on the river Seine, and of course the
Eiffel tower.
There are only a few remaining spots available. Interested
students should see Mr. Fogel in the English Department, or call
416 395 3280, extension 20090, to find out more exciting
information.
