Student Awards & Recognition
Newtonbrook Department
Awards
Awards are granted to students who have attained
the highest standing and/or made a significant
contribution to the program. The following
awards are also granted to students through
individual subject areas.
Audrey Ormrod Award
Presented to a graduating French Immersion
student who has been an active volunteer in the
community and has contributed to the positive
learning environment of the school.
David Waugh Memorial
Award
Awarded to the most improved student in Grade 12
History.
Jim Peterson
Parliamentary Award
Presented to the student who has achieved high
academic standing in the area of Canadian
studies and is committed to the betterment of
the human condition through involvement in
student government.
Sandy Solomon Memorial
Award
Presented for excellent academic achievement and
exemplary school citizenship to a student who
has been a successful participant in the ESL
program.
The Mark Meslin
Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to two Grade 12 students each with
outstanding achievement in Mathematics. One
student will be selected from the college and
university level math.
Peter Edwards
Mathematics Award
Awarded to the student who has demonstrated
achievement, creativity and service to his or
her peers in Mathematics.
Paul Stanbury Award
Presented to a student with an achievement of at
least 75% in math who has helped fellow students
extensively in math.
The Sheridan CISS
Memorial Award
Presented for dedication and diligence in the
Music program.

Certificates
Business Certificate
- Presented to graduating students who have
earned five Business Studies credits. Students
must apply for this certificate through the
Business Department.
French Immersion
Proficiency Certificate - Presented
to graduating students from the French Immersion
Program.
Extended French
Proficiency Certificate - Presented
to graduating students from the Extended French
Program

Awards of Distinction
Staff Award for
Scholarship and Leadership
Presented to a graduating honour student who
provided distinguished leadership in school
activities.
Principal's Award For
Student Leadership
Presented by the Principal to a student who has
demonstrated leadership both in and outside of
the school.
School Medal
Presented by the staff to the student who has
attained high standing in at least six 12U/M
credits in a wide range of academic disciplines.
These credits must have been earned at
Newtonbrook during at least two years of full
time study.
Governor General's
Academic Medal
Awarded to the student who achieves the highest
average upon graduation.

School Citizenship - Outstanding Contribution Awards
Recipients of the
following awards are selected by the Awards
Committee in consultation with staff. Students
are asked to complete the Awards Application
form in order to be considered for these awards.
Centerpoint - Revenue
Properties Co. Ltd. Award
Granted to the graduating student who has
achieved high academic standing and has made a
significant contribution to the school and/or
community.
Willowdale Rotary Club
Award
Awarded to the graduating student who has
invested outstanding time and energy to make a
significant contribution towards the betterment
of the school.
OSSTF District 12
Student Award
Presented to a student for his/her exceptional
involvement and service to their school and/or
community life.
School Council Student
Appreciation Award
Presented to a student(s) who has actively
participated on and contributed to the School
Council.
Aramark Foods School
Spirit
Presented to students who have contributed to
improving school spirit at Newtonbrook.
S.A.C. Award
Presented by the Students' Administrative
Council for distinction in school activities.
J.B. Slack Foudners'
Award
Presented to the graduating student who has
impressively combined academic achievement with
strong involvement in school activities.
Zayandehroudi Athletic
and Academic Scholarship
Presented to one female and one male student who
have demonstrated excellence in Academics and
Athletics.
Community Involvement
Award
Presented to a student in the graduating class
who has taken an active interest in local
community issues.
Lieutenant Governor's
Community Volunteer Award
Presented to a Graduating student in recognition
of exemplary student involvement in the
community.
School Letter Award
Presented to graduating students who have made a
significant contribution in several aspects of
school life. The award is based on an
accumulation of points throughout the student’s
high school career at Newtonbrook. Academics,
Athletics, Co-curricular Activities and School
Service are the areas where one can earn points.
