ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY

Students are expected to attend school on time every day. Regular attendance is a critical factor for increased student success. Students have a duty to attend classes, to study and to learn. Parents will receive calls each evening from our automated dialing system if their son/daughter was absent for a class or arrived late.
It is extremely important that the office has accurate parental contact information on file as students under 18 will not be allowed to leave school unless they have a signed note from a parent/guardian or unless the office is able to speak to a parent/guardian on the phone.

IF YOU ARE LATE FOR SCHOOL
If it is the first period of the day, report directly to your period 1 class. If you are late during any other period report to the main office, sign in and then go directly to class.

IF YOU MUST LEAVE SCHOOL DURING THE DAY
If you know in advance that you have to leave school for an appointment bring a note signed by your parent/guardian indicating the time that you are required to leave and the reason for your absence. At the time indicated on your note, show your note to your teacher and immediately report to the main office with your note to sign out of school.
If you feel ill during the day or forget your note, obtain permission from your teacher to go to the main office. Immediately proceed to the main office, explain your condition and ask to have your parents contacted. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES LEAVE WITHOUT PERMISSION DURING THE SCHOOL DAY.

IF YOU ARE ABSENT FROM SCHOOL

Parents should notify the school by calling 416-395-3280 and leave a message indicating the student’s first and last name, and the reason for the absence. When you return to school you must bring a note from your parent/guardian indicating your name and homeform (clearly printed), the dates/times of your absence, the reason for absence / lateness, the signature of your parent/guardian and your signature.
Your absence note should be presented to each of your teachers upon your return and put in your last period teacher’s attendance folder to be filed in the main office.
Students are responsible for all work and evaluations missed during their absence and will be subject to department and school policies.
IF YOU ARE ABSENT FROM A CLASS BUT NOT FROM SCHOOL
From time to time students may miss classes due to involvement in fieldtrips, sports, teams, clubs or other events. If you must miss a regularly scheduled class you are expected to inform your teacher in advance of your absence. You must also arrange with your teacher to complete any evaluations in advance and catch up on any missed assignments.

Locks and Lockers

Students will be assigned a locker at the beginning of the school year; however, they remain the property of the Toronto District School Board. Record your name on the locker card that your homeroom teacher gives you. Students must provide their own locks. Do not give your combination to anyone. Students should leave valuables at home. Newtonbrook Secondary School and the Toronto District School Board are not responsible for loss or theft of student property.
Lockers are loaned for the specific purpose of storing textbooks, clothing, notebooks and other materials necessary and/or incidental to education. Your belongings must be removed from the locker assigned to you by the June Exam period or they will be disposed of.
Should the school have lawful concerns, the locker may be entered by a school administrator with or without the presence of the occupant. Searches of lockers may be carried out as part of the duties to maintain order and discipline in the school.
